Medical Gloves

Medical gloves are disposable gloves that are used during medical procedures. They are worn to prevent bacterial or viral transmission between healthcare health care workers and patients as well as protecting against any chemical hazards such as chemotherapy drugs.

The use of gloves during medical procedures has a long history. Sterilized medical gloves were first used in 1890 by William Stewart Halsted who had recognized the importance of sterile conditions during surgery.  Gloves that were manufactured from rubber were introduced which were dipped in carbolic acid.

Latex free medical gloves

Great attention is paid to the production of latex or latex free gloves for the medical industry. They must be strong, anti-infective and resist the effects of any chemicals which they may be exposed to.

Medical examination gloves are used for general medical procedures. They are generally made from either vinyl or nitrile. Nitrile gloves are favoured because they have superior stength and resistance to chemicals, but vinyl gloves are cheaper.

Surgical gloves are used for surgical procedures and need to be to be completely sterile. Neither nitrile or vinyl types have the necessary tactile sensitivity so latex, isoprene or neoprene are used.

Medical gloves are manufactured to a very high standard. The choice of glove will depend on the degree of protection required for a specific use. Their production has its own standards and grades from 1 to 3. These grades are based on FDA requirements. If gloves receive a medical grade that means that they are highly protective. When selecting medical gloves, there are a few points to consider. You should consider how much protection you need, the quality of the gloves and how they are made, and whether you have any allergic reactions to the glove’s material.
