Nitrile gloves were first introduced in 1990 and are now commonly used as an alternative to latex gloves. They are widely used by medical professionals and in many other situations where latex allergy is a problem and latex free gloves are required.
Nitrile is a synthetic rubber. It has good resistance to chemicals and can withstand a wide range of temperatures. It is less elastic than latex, though, so nitrile gloves are not as close fitting as their latex couterparts and do not offer the same tactile sensitivity. This means that they are not suitable for surgery. They are also considerably more expensive.
Nitrile gloves slip onto the hands easily and are comfortable to wear. They are strong and durable and offer excellent resistance to punctures. Most are available in small, medium and large sizes. Often they are textured to improve grip.
Different colors of nitrile gloves
Several different colors are available. Purple , blue and green are favoured for medical use because they allow the gloves to be distinguished from latex types and put patients at ease. Black nitrile gloves are used is used by trades such as tatooists and mechanics because it hides stains. It is also favoured by police and security officers.
Quality of nitrile gloves
Nitrile is the prefered choice for medical examination gloves so are rigorously tested and graded acording to thier quality. There are actually 3 grades available:
Medical Grade – For medical use with a high degree of protection. The evaluation of these gloves is based on FDA requirements and specifications.
High Risk – For use in the emergency medical services.
Utility Grade – Not for medical use. Such gloves are usually used for general purpose hand protection.
The powder is usually added so that gloves can be put on smoothly, but it can bring allergens to the skin.
Choosing the right gloves for a particular purpose is extremely important. Latex gives the best fit and feel, nitrile is the strongest, and vinyl is the cheapest. If you suffer from latex allergy, choose either vinyl or nitrile gloves.
